  3.   HARD DISK INSTALLATION
  4.   ************************
  5.        For a simple installation run the program on this disk called
  6.   INSTALL.BAT. It will create the directories:
  7.        c:\backmail
  8.        c:\transfer
  9.   on your hard disk. If you want to use other directories then copy the
  10.   contents of this disk into your directory of choice and run the program
  11.   BMCONFIG. BMCONFIG will allow you to set BackMail's paths appropriately
  12.   for your machine.
  13.   
  14.   FLOPPY DISK INSTALLATION
  15.   ************************
  16.        Just run BMCONFIG on the distribution diskette and set the path
  17.   information there to the drive and subdirectories on which you will be
  18.   running your floppy. Note that if you are running BackMail on a floppy
  19.   you should have this diskette in place at all times... otherwise
  20.   BackMail will not be able to find the files it needs during run time.
  21.   
  22.   NOTE: BackMail will not let you declare the root of any directory as
  23.   the destination for incoming files. You will want to store incoming files
  24.   in there own directory so that incoming files will not overwrite your own
  25.   files with the same name.

  27.   MODEM DIP SWITCHES AND INTERNAL MODEMS

  29.   To run your modem properly your modem must be set so that:
  30.  
  31.        1)   It sends CARRIER DETECT only when it detects a carrier. See
  32.             your modem manual to make sure that your modem is not leaving
  33.             CARRIER DETECT perpetually on.
  34.        2)   It hangs up the modem when the computer toggles DTR off. In
  35.             your manual this setting is probably
  36.             described as "DTR ENABLED".
  37.        3)   AUTOANSWER should be set OFF
  38.        
  39.   This version of BackMail incorporates modem setup strings which will enable
  40.   carrier and DTR detect on most internal modems, viz:
  41.            Carrier Enable: &C1
  42.                DTR Enable: &D2
  43.   If your internal modem does not use these values you should change the
  44.   string BackMail uses to reset your modem. To do this
  45.  
  46.        1)   Call up the CHANGE SETUP function from the main menu.
  47.        2)   Select TECHNICIAN SETTINGS
  48.        3)   Alter TECH SETTING #3.
  49.  
  50.   By default tech setting 3 is '&C1&D2'.
  51.   
  52.   THE FIRST TIME YOU RUN BACKMAIL

  54.        ... the program will report it cannot find copies of its INMAIL
  55.   OUTMAIL and PHONE files and ask you permission to create them. Hit "N"
  56.   to tell it to create New files.

  58.   Once you are running you should got to the CHANGE SETUP function under the
  59.   main menu and set your:
  60.  
  61.         Phone Prefixes
  62.         ***************
  63.          Set the dialing prefixes appropriate to your phone system.
  64.  
  65.         Availability Time

  67.          This is the period of the day you will be telling other BackMailers
  68.          you are available for BackMail calls.
  69.  
  70.         Max Retrys

  72.         This is the maximum number of times you want other Backmailers
  73.         to retry calling your number if they find busy or get no answer.

  75.         Letterhead

  77.         Enter the Letterhead line which will appear at the top of all of
  78.         your outgoing messages.
